Do canister filters work in half-filled tanks?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry one more thing..
My tank is on the ground at the moment but would the RENA filstar XP1 work?
so both of them are gonna be on the floor

no. . . you simply won't get enough flow from the canister to make it worth the money you will spend on it. if your tank is always going to be on the floor you should find a different kind of filter.

oh would it not work at all?

...what do you reccomend then?
would it work once I get a tank stand? the tank will probably be around 3 or 4' above ground level..

If you run the powerhead the way I explained then the canister WILL work on the same level as the tank. The powerhead will replace the head pressure that normally fills the cannister. This is one of the main reasons I recomended it in the first place.

ok thanks!
what is the minimum and maximum distance the canister can be with the tank ?

Thats not really very importiant because you can compensate for a longer hose run with a slightly larger powerhead.

what powerhead would go best with the XP1?

and do I need a powerhead if the tank was filled to the top?

if the tanks on the same level as the canister....yes. Cannisters with the pump on the bottom would work but at a reduced rate. Cannisters with a top mounted pump will barly turn over.

There are so many brands out there I'm not even going to TRY to guess whats common in your area but a good rule of thumb for this kind of set up is to slightly more than match the GPH rating of the cannister. In other words if the cannister says 350 GPH...run a powerhead that says 400.....ECT.

oh so at the same level..it will work a little..
what do you mean by a canister with a top mounted pump? what would the XP1 be like?

would the powerhead fit in the intake tube?

The XP cannisters have top mounted pumps and wont work very well AT all without help. However if you use the Powerhead pre-filter/turbocharger it'll work as well or better than it would mounted under the tank.
