If a fish for example a frontosa is eating at the surface or eating foods to high in protein you may see them bobbing in the water and then later bubbles escaping from the anus. This is usually due to the wrong diet or swallowing to much air. I know first hand that this situation will usually end in death at some point. In my opinion fish expelling gas is a sign of a problem that needs to be addressed! Most fish that are surface feeders the air they gulp immediately escapes from their gills. But a fish that is not a top water species swallows air and it does cause problems. Do your home work on whether your species of fish is surface, mid water or deep species and get food that is presented in the appropriated area of the water column! Hope that helps.
