do i have a jaguar cichlid? what is he?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe you have a normal female Jag...
Pic 1 regular female look
Pic 2 Fry tending
pic 3 Male at under 5 inches
Pic 4 Male fry tending...note "female" pattern...
Pic 5 Male 8+ inches
As can be seen males ( mine and the pic you posted )generally develop more defined intricate maze like patterns...and not vertical stripes unless fry tending...

who ever said hybrid has probably never owned one and just calls everything a hybrid aka not a reliable source of information
exactly what i was thinking

i once did not know anything about any fish so i had to ask some questions there is no thing wrong with questions but if you dont know a true answer from either experience or a reference plz dont throw out a random guess to something you can not relate to. to the OP thanks for asking and hope we have answered your question your jag looks to be top of the line and will grow into a great fish with more personality than you would expect.

Looks like a male jag to me at 4" the black should have started to fade more on a female , he looks lot like my second one did at that size , mines 10" now and becoming a beast had to nurse him through a few illness's but he's on the mend now and becoming chunky

honduran variant has more blue in the fins than the standard jag, like aquamojos photo. Other than that, the fish is pretty much the same. I have standard jags and they get very gold, especially my smaller female. Yours definitely looks like a juvie jag. I too agree, it looks female.

i don't know where people are getting hybrid from, just looks like a regular jag to me ,the patterns and amount of gold or blue on fins varies from fish to fish.
