lupin, countless sources have told me that aquarium salt or its equivalent, softener salt are good to use in african cichlid tanks. can you explain why this is a ripoff?
"Aquarium" salt is pure sodium chloride in a fancy package. My point is why use the "aquarium" salt when you can use table salt just fine? I might add that most people just follow along the bandwagon to campaign against the use of table salt without trying to see it for themselves whether table salt is harmful or not. Before somebody keeps riding the bandwagon that table salt is harmful, please prove that it is.

oh my bad. i thought you were saying that salt shouldn't be added unless treating disease

I should have clarified that I still stand by my belief that salt is best added only when you are treating for health issues which is why whenever I find ich cases, table salt is my first suggestion. No need to waste a few bucks to the petstore if you have table salt in your kitchen.

i heard that aquarium salt is not iodized and table salt is. i heard that kosher salt is ok because it is not iodized. isnt iodized salt bad for aquariums?

Type and Quantity of Salt
Common table salt is suitable, however it should be non-iodized and contain no additives. Rock or Kosher salt are excellent choices, as they are straight sodium chloride with nothing else added.

Whether it has iodide or not, the salt is still safe for use.

Accoring to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iodine

Iodine “is concentrated in sea water” and is “required in trace amounts by all animals and some plants.”

Which leads me to believe it is pretty harmless is very small quantities…

The “Sea Salt” I have in my kitchen says “This salt does not provide iodine” and lists ingredients as: Sea Salt

I also looked up the anti caking ingredients real quick and they also seemed harmless in small quantities…

just something basic that i wanted to better understand. thanks!

I use iodized table salt whenever there are any nipped fins or any signs of ick at all. Never had any issue or a fish die from ick by treating with it and bumping the temp. I would never buy aquarium salt. Unless i see some proof saying otherwise, i will stick with it.
