Do I need a special tank for fx5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks....One of the guys was saying he runs all ceramic rings in his fx5....anyone else got any input on what I should put in this guy for media?

It is ceramic "noodles"... Yes thats whacha need!

my fx5 came w/ carbon, amonia remover and the ceramic noodles. Im gonna watch the dvd and set it up and unhook my whisperer 40 and leave my two penquin 350's running....anymore input? And how often i should clean? Thanks in advance.

Okay....big dilemma. NOt too big but gonna be a pain in the ass. Ive gotta drain my tank and move it forward because its up against a wall and my fx5 won fit in the front doors and i cant get it behind the tank. SO ive gotta drain it into large rubbermaids/ and do a 50 percent water change. Move the tank and stand forward(empty) and put the filter in the stand from the back. I need to do this so the canister can be directly underneath my tank so it works at 100%. SO now I have a week to hear your guys input on setting up my canister...how the media should be placed etc....

Don't ever use the ammonia remover media. This will harm your biological media since it will absorb ammonia and nitrite that will be needed for your bio-filtration.

In the center top basket I used filter fiber. If you use anything that filters out smaller particles than that it will clog up way to fast. The other 2 baskets you can put biomedia in.

Can you get access to the filter to remove it for cleaning after the tank is filled? Also, you can have the filter off to the side and it will still work 100%. The one of the two hoses will be longer than the other. The best thing to do is to remove the ribbed hoses and god with vynal hose. This will speed up the output.

If you have a look at the thread called "Fluval Fx5 Modification" you will see the output that I have used.

Filter break down process I use;

1) keep filter running
2) close intake and pull intake off slowly to allow the filter to start sucking in air.
3) allow filter to pump out some of the water into the tank with the intake valve removed. (Watch your aquarium water level!!)
4) close output valve and unplug the pump
5) remove output valve and remove filter.

Not a drop of water should be spilt while removing the valves using this procedure. Hagen obveously didn't think of using this procedure since they say to use a rag to catch the little spill of water that you will get when removing the valves.

jgray...do you then need to fill up the canister w/ the two gallons of h20 to restart the filter? Id imagine you could just pull it back out of the tank. I guess I need to leave the tank a bit forward to remove the filter. And in the dvd they say I need to put the filter directly under the tank to get 100% use of the filter. DOes the nylon hose w/ out ribs help acheive this?

where can i get some vinyl hose? Help me out!! DOin this on thursday or friday....

Man your local aquarium shop should have it.
