carbon really only removes medication and some odors. even if he has a very high load carbon wouldn't help with anything. as long as you keep up with your weekly water changes you dont need it.
carbon is great as short time filter medium. it reduces much poison chemicals...BUT carbon loses that effect very fast and if you don't change it, the effect turns against you. The carbon starts to release all that crap it catched out of the water.
