So I just went up to the city (SF) to check out a few new lfs, and to my surprise, it was a do it yourself store. it seemed kinda crazy and messy but it was an interesting idea. it made it so the service was fast. but i couldn't help but think that it was terrible for the fish. have you guys ever seen a place like this?

while i was there i netted my very first baby red tailed catfish :)

My lfs lets me net up my fish. It's because i'm so damm picky though.

Did you have to talk to someone to get a net? Anyone to tell you requirements of fish you are interested in? Sounds like a lot of fish could die from going to inadequate homes/unprepared owners, especially if they are selling RTC's. No flaming intended, since you didn't give any background on how you are keeping the RTC.

I can just imagine kids running nets through tanks...sounds like a bad idea for the fish though in particular for people new to fish keeping.

I think this is a terrible idea.

There is much that could go wrong with inexperienced fish catchers. Leaning too hard on tank, crushing fish with net, fish getting stuck in net, fish jumping out... etc etc.

No way Jose!

my LFS lets me do everything i just walk in get my feeder rats crickets and whatever fish i want and i go up and pay for it lol they let me do it because i am there so much lol at least 3-5 times a week

Hell, I love letting the employees at the lfs net my fish for me. Saves me the trouble. Just sit back and wait for them to hand me the bag. If I had the option, hell, I'd say net him for me. Less I have to do. I'm not new to fish keeping or netting the fish but I'm no fish keeping guru that has to net my own fish, lol.

i am definitely not new to fish keeping, and i would never ever have a store like this. it really was terrible for the fish, but it is the only place in SF that has an abundance of rare and exotic fish.

im keeping the rtc in a 55 for a year, and then to a 400 :) waiting for the next tax return

Not to mention, if you are doing the netting, what is the employee getting paid to do?!

considering the problems I've seen some employees have while netting me fish, I think it's a great idea for my fish, at least. everyone else's... hard to say. nothing better for the fish getting experience than a skilled and knowledgeable employee, but those are few and far between.
