Do it yourself pet stores?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i am definitely not new to fish keeping, and i would never ever have a store like this. it really was terrible for the fish, but it is the only place in SF that has an abundance of rare and exotic fish.

im keeping the rtc in a 55 for a year, and then to a 400 :) waiting for the next tax return

Haha, that RTC will outgrow that 55 in less than 6 months.

I've never kept a rtc myself, but as far as I understand, when it comes to their growth rates, he will definitely outgrow a 55 gallon tank within 12 months easily.

Lol, I believe we posted exactly in sync.

I think also that its a really bad idea totally,
just think of all the inexperienced people trying to net a fish, great for the experienced like us but i just feel sorry for the fish with the kids and people that dont no how to net a fish. Also just think of all the fish going on walk about round the shop lol.

I think this is a good idea...minus the obvious:

Children/stupid people intentionally or otherwise hurting the fish.

Inexperienced people hurting fish and just trying to catch another. Inexperienced people hurting their own fish.

etc etc etc.

I can see where this LFS can run with only one employee or so...but still...there have to be livestock losses.

In the end it comes down to responsibility, and we want that with the LFS...not a bunch of people running around with nets.

Glad to see what you got what you wanted though. Hope you are ready for the commitment.

a sale is a sale dude they highly wouldnt care for proper fish keepers just the money....

said this in your other thread, but that won't work. Figure out something within the next few months (anywhere from 3-6 on avg)! He will be a foot long by then and outgrowing your tank!

Generally, you are correct. But what if for that 1 sale, an inexperienced person kills 3 fish to net that 1? It makes bad business sense to allow customers to net fish. I am totally against this idea. If this spreads nationwide, we will have a bunch of walmarts where kids throw footballs inside and ride bikes in the store. Little children will think it's "funny" and "cool" to run around with a netted fish. Only experienced workers should be netting fish. Period.

Thats exactly my opinion accept i think the option should be their for experienced keepers but not for most people

This practice is common here in large stores. You just take a bucket and a net. Fill the bucket with water from the water tank.
Net the fish and they would bag it for you to bring it to the counter to pay.
