Since wild aro populations seems to be such an issue...

I wonder do they have aro release programs over seas?

If arows are so low in numbers now why dont they stop selling them to people and have more aro farms to keep up the population.

Fair question. Firstly, it's not easy setting up aro farms. It takes a lot of money, resources etc. Only F2 & beyond aros are allowed to be sold. Also Asian aros take a long time to reach sexual maturity, hard to tell the difference between males & females and at the end of the day from a batch of 100 in a pond, a high percentage would not produce any off spring. The farms are under no obligation to restock the wild population. Farms are also aware since there is inadequate policing of wild aros, even if they did restock, it will not likely change much since those restock fishes would be poached.

The farms also see no incentive to restock wild populations since they do not generate revenue if they did & the value of the fishes are such that it can be hard to imagine someone releasing a 2K USD fish into the river. It's basic economics to the farms I guess. Many, many other "problems" encountered that are too long winded to discuss hehehe. :)

this was what i was thinking also....:screwy:

nevermind...chaos just posted. thanks for some insight!

Thats ****, i hate to see how animals become endangered and what not due to people killing and hunting the arows for money.

chaos - does the govnt. have any vested intersted in helping restock the wild population?

I doubt it. the government has more important things to do than keep track of animals... im enraged about this :irked:

I would be keen to know if any agencies have done a census on wild aro population here in Asia to actually verify how depleted is the wild population. I can imagine these agencies trying to police areas like Kalimantan, Sumatra or even Malaysia would be no small accomplishment.

Also we have now spawned backyard breeders who have no need to chip their fishes since they don't have any licences etc. It's hard to differentiate these aros from the wild population.
