Do you buy deformed or crippled fish?

I got a Dempsey from a LFS that was considered "unadoptable" because it looks like it has a bite out of its belly. He is a very sweet fish and I took him home. He is just as happy and energetic as any other fish.

Deformed fish don't always mean bad genes.

Bad water conditions, and such also play a role.

For example: Koi can get mouth rot and ulcers from being in too crowded conditions, which leave them deformed from the damage is caused.

Bad genes? No. Bad fish keepers.

Here is a koi that is perfectly healthy, but because the keeper didn't clean the pond properly before winter came along, it developed mouth rot, and permanently deformed it's mouth. I now have this koi, and he's as healthy as a horse.
With the koi's mouth, that is an injury not a deformity. Deformities are bad traits carried in the genes of animals e.g. angels with crooked dorsal fins. Like aidenb said, "just don't breed them and their deformity will end with them".

Deformities can occur in many batches of fry. All raised the same as well looked after babies and some are deformed. It is up to the breeders to cull those but they would rather get the money for them knowing someone will eventually buy them.

Deformed stems from bad breeding and genes. (These are the ones I am talking about)
Crippled is from injuries.
