do you have a fishy job?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats awesome that you got a job at a good lfs. the only ones around here that ever have openings are the ones where they just want workers not knowledgable people. one owner said i knew too much and would cause too many problems bc i would work both the herp and fish sides. i barely ever go there anymore after that

Unfortunately though, we are seriously understaffed and three of the employees are going to college next week. Somebody applied who worked at another LFS. We were going to hire him until he decided that he makes more money on unemployment. Our next best application is from somebody who has a Jack Dempsey at home and had convicts in the past. :(. He called platy a "plate-E" and didn't know that they were live bearers.

It's tough for fish stores to find knowledgeable people who will work for LFS pay :(.

i work in sleep disorders. but the main office( hr) has a 145gal tank. its about to be done since the fish are so old. and dieing off, trying to make it my tank hehehehehehehehe would be so sweet.

I would do like 1 day a week at a lfs if i could. but i dont know enough to feel good about working there. but it would be fun if most people at lfs wernt *******s

i applied at one, i knew more about fish then the other guys there., he asked if i had another job, i said yes, i work in sleep disorder's hence why i only wanna work 1 day a week to keep me busy ( i have 4 days off a week i work super long shifts) while my gf is at work on thrusday , he told it would be a better choice to quit my job making 20hr ( tops out at 35) and work for him full time at 7.25hr, i laughed thinking he was joking, but turns out he wasnt, he started yelling at me, calling me names and everything. I walked out. i may go work at another shop, not sure. since then it gave me a bad taste since then.

I work from home, so i have my tanks here

wonder if that counts? :p

but on another hand, i've always wanted to volunteer at an aquarium
or a zoo with lots of fish :D

Well I own a LFS (two locations) now for 19years. Started the business when I was 22. Started working at a Pet Shop when I was 15.
It is a challenge to find knowledgeable help & keep them on a low paying scale. Being a mom & pop shop I do not roll in the money like a Box store or other types of business. Many that work for me last 3-4years until burn out in retail or out of school to move on to higher paying jobs with benefits. It sucks because I wish I could pay much more to keep some help but I'm not at that point yet. I do offer discounts + I add a $1-$2 a hour in store credit. I buy lunch on Saturdays & try to take everyone out for Steak dinners around the holidays. Plus give Christmas money. I try to do some little things here there to make it not so bad.
I'm actually looking for Help at the Main store In Cleveland but need experience help since I'm so busy its hard to train someone new to the hobby. I get a lot of newbies wanting to work for me but its hard. Customers want to feel comfortable with someone that knows what they are talking about.

Me Dave
