do you have a fishy job?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I work for absolutely fish. One of the best fish stores in NJ. I stated out as a customer then an eventually got a job there about 3 months ago.

The Atlantic ocean is my fish tank.

I work on the water 4 months a year. I handle tuna, sharks, billfish, mahi and wahoo every day. Population dynamics, tagging, migration, impact from recreational angling etc...

My path: BS in Zoology, MS in Marine Biology, PhD in Zoology

The other 8 months of the year I teach, write papers, beg for grant money and analyze data.

Its what I do for a living. I am a Marine Biologist.

Well I own a LFS (two locations) now for 19years. Started the business when I was 22. Started working at a Pet Shop when I was 15.
It is a challenge to find knowledgeable help & keep them on a low paying scale. Being a mom & pop shop I do not roll in the money like a Box store or other types of business. Many that work for me last 3-4years until burn out in retail or out of school to move on to higher paying jobs with benefits. It sucks because I wish I could pay much more to keep some help but I'm not at that point yet. I do offer discounts + I add a $1-$2 a hour in store credit. I buy lunch on Saturdays & try to take everyone out for Steak dinners around the holidays. Plus give Christmas money. I try to do some little things here there to make it not so bad.
I'm actually looking for Help at the Main store In Cleveland but need experience help since I'm so busy its hard to train someone new to the hobby. I get a lot of newbies wanting to work for me but its hard. Customers want to feel comfortable with someone that knows what they are talking about.

Me Dave

I wish I had EVER had a boss this nice. I have worked for under minimum wage at multiple locations.

I have worked at two different LFS's, and I manage a laboratory at UWSP (local college). I basically oversee 45 lab aquariums, and some other ones we maintain outside of the lab. I make sure that no one kills the fish. The hard thing is, the pay is terrible, and we dont get paid at all during the summer. This means Im the only person taking care of the fish.

Oh well. Putting in my dues .01 at a time to get to a real fish job like MY boss.

Im also getting started in some farming aspects of the business, and have business relationships with a couple online stores. I find myself in "Fishy Business" more than I usually expect. But thats good. :D
