Do you have stressful tanks? Vs. relaxing tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My old setup had an oscar, jaguar cichlid, and ornate bichir. Aggression was usually pretty minimal, except for when the jaguar spawned. She would then spend the next 2-3 days defending her eggs. The first time she spawned she was lip locking with the Oscar alot but he kept trying to get to the eggs. I thought for sure I'd wakeup the next morning and 1 of them would be dead. But no, never any serious injuries from aggression.

The worst injuries my Oscar would get were self inflicted. Sometimes in the middle of the night I'd hear a loud splash followed by thuds. The next morning he'd have a scratch/gash/etc going down his forehead or body from where something spooked him and he took off right into a rock.

None of this really stressed me though. As someone already mentioned, pretty much the only stress I get is financially based, or when a prized/favorite fish becomes ill with something (and medications aren't cheap!)

Back in February I changed my tank setup. Current stock is a more peaceful tank than I had before, but I mostly went with this setup for a change, not because it would be less stressful.

Current Stock:
5 red hook silver dollars
6 common silver dollars
2 small electric blue jack dempseys
4 different carnivorous plecos (L-14, L-114, L-264, L-326)

The only aggression I see is the occassional pleco scooting another pleco out its territory, but nothing serious.

I only buy adult fish now. Stress was with expesive small fish and an ich outbreak. Adults seem to not get sick as easily.

I have rbps which about 95 percent of the time do absolutely nothing. And when I say nothing I mean they don't even swim around they stay in exactly one spot. So I guess I have a peaceful predator tank?
