Excessive handling can certainly damage the slime coat. Every once in a while is okay, though. Just keep it in the water!

My australian lungfish loves coming up for a rub.

I remember that ordeal. I think it got some people banned.

i had a 6" oscar for a year or so, from a little baby. grew so so so attached to him, (and this was also with my severums) and he'd follow me when id walk by, or if i was doing a WC hed come "help" me out by getting in the way, or if i were doing maintaince, it was "drop what you're doing and pet me!!" best fish ever. hed jump out of the water for food and well..beg like a dog too, and wouldnt pet too too often because slime coat etc but.. once here and there is all fine

depending on the fish.

Some swim away, some don't mind being held, some swim threw fingers.

I normally hold my fish when moving them to a different tank, netting can hurt larger fish.

i'll sometimes draw my finger along the topside of my oscar but he doesn't sit still for 'petting' ever. and he's bitten me a couple times so i only pet his back end, lol.

i had a 18" fire eel that i would pet when i fed him...

See, thats why its so cool. I don't make a habit of it, but the fish has so much personality. I think that some fish have more interactive capabilities and it's cool when we get to share that with them.
