Yes, I quarantine all my newly bought fish. Since I keep mostly goldfish myself, the likeliest issues I can encounter are gill flukes, ich, fish lice, anchorworms and internal parasites, all of which are common ailments that can happen with goldfish. For this, I make sure I stock sufficient table salt, praziquantel and trichlorfon to battle all these common issues in case they happen. Quarantine period takes place in various tanks ranging 10-15g for 3-4 weeks. I make sure all my new fish are given stringent quarantine procedures being monitored regularly and I do make it my point to check every new fish thoroughly despite my hectic schedule so I can minimize the issues as much as possible.

Well said ~ very well said.

I mentioned camallanus worms earlier as a good reason to quarentine..

but there is a catch. the quarentine period must be 4-6 months for these internal worms, because they can be inside the fish and it takes this long for the worm to reach the point in its lifecycle where they are visible out the fishes anus..

and the only effective med (levamisole) is tough to get. normal dewormers like Piperazine are ineffective against this bug.

camallanus = curse.

I dealt with it back in 2006, and spent about a year trying to get rid of it in the tank. Only 2 fish showed the visible worms, and only lost one of them (to aggression from tankmates ironically). I still have some of the tankmates, and never had it re-emerge in that tank.

Camallanus got me looking at fish anuses every time I pick out fish or look at tanks at the store in fear of the little red stick coming out of the fish

I did use levamisole, although I currently use medicated flakes with albendazole as the primary ingredient.

thats the thing with Camallanus and why it is becoming more common.

unless you have had it and know what to look for, you'll never notice it.

as such, LFS's have fish all the time with camallanus and never realize it.

and so, it spreads to your home tank, it spreads when you bring fish back in, it just spreads, and few people know whats going on...

it also used to be a big problem with livebearers, but now a lot of new world cichlids appear in LFS with camallanus. I also imagine that once it got a hold in fish farms they aren't going to treat it, so the cycle continues
