nah, i don't even think of mma at all when i see those shirts, i think of the d bags wearing them.

i also don't see it the same as wearing a jersey....who wears an NFL logo jersey or an NBA LOGO jersey or shirt? nobody. these tap out people aren't supporting their favorite fighter, just a "league" in general? Atleast show some loyalty to a fighter

the thing is, it's a brand for mma fans and some brands sponsor fighters so buying it will support that fighter. plus it's not like it's a team sport where you can buy a team jersey. not all fighters have their own personal shirts made for them. and even if you do buy a shirt that has your favorite fighter on it, it will also have tapout or affliction on the shirt since they sponser that fighter. except for randy couture, he has a name big enough to have his own brand, but i don't particularly like the designs of his stuff.

plus, i don't look for tapout shirts to see if someone is a fighter, i look for the ears. if you see someone with coliflower ears, you might not wanna go insulting their mother or something, lol

Fascinating thread. I think part of the maturation process is to find ways to understand the world and the people around you. When I was a kid, appearances made a big impression on me, and I believed that I could discern things about people based on their appearance, clothing, speech, etc.... And I felt that in order to project the image of myself I wanted, I had to affect clothing, grooming and attitudes that others would respond to. This probably starts in middle school, and proceeds through all the stages of life.
Forty years later, I learn everything I need to know about people by the things they say, and how they act. I could care less about appearances.
The best part of being older, is that I've been there, and done that. The tool who thinks that everyone who wears MMA gear is a douche, is just projecting his own insecurities. The vast majority of people I know who wear MMA gear are great people.

My son is 12, a NAGA champion, and I follow the sport at every level. So I wear an MMA shirt. That makes me a douche? I have a wife, 3 kids, a house, 2 businesses, and have great life. You think I worry about some anonymous troll in his mother's basement making blanket statements about people he doesn't know?
When this person does a little growing up, maybe his opinions will evolve as bit.
Wear whatever you want, who cares what anybody else thinks?

well...i don't see WWE shirts floating around but i sure see the undertaker, jon cena, DX etc floating around...why should their marketing plan be any different?

good post notnew2dis

you're right, mma isn't generally so mainstream yet so there is still a lot of ignorance out there so to me, it's a kind of understanding, but it is getting better

i think everyone will catch on though

that's the thing though...most of us aren't talking abou the sport, we're talking about the sterotype of the people who wear them.

i'mma start wearing ski masks and camo everywhere but please try not to judge me = )

ufc pays the fighters but they don't promote them that way, they will make a shirt to promote an event, like Brock Lesnar vs Cain velasquez, but they won't make a ufc shirt for brock lesnar. and if they do, they only do that for super huge draws which would only be a handful of fighters out of thousands

and fighters don't get paid by the promotion like the ufc to train. they only pay them to show up to fight. all the expenses of training, nutrition, gyms to train at, teams to train with, the gear to train with, medical insurance............ none of that is paid for by the ufc or strikeforce or whatever, so they have to have sponsors like tapout, affliction, rvca and other brands like that

keep in mind, ufc and mma in general is still young, it's only been around about 20 years or so. basket ball, boxing and wwe has been around since dinosaurs roamed the earth

I dont find anything dushy about it at all.

but it's because of the sport that the stereotype is there. if tapout was a brand that makes baseball bats, i'm sure the dbag thing would not be associated with wearing tapout

but like i said, i understand the stereotype though, i feel the same way about it just as i would about you being stereo typed if you wore camo and ski masks around. it would just be a case of having some ignorance, that's all
