Nope never use carbon, it takes up good bio media space.

I use just to help keep the tank water from getting stinky. If I ever own a fish room seperate from my house then I will stop using it cause it does just take up space that I could use for other media.

I only use carbon in an emergency need some kind of filler filter media stance. The only good thing I see about it is that after it looses its chemical filtration properties it has a space for bacteria to grow.
