i use carbon all the time what is the problem with carbon in my filter?

i use it, gets rid of discoloration, and smell or aquariums. so it's useful.

i didnt know it was so unpopular. i have only recently thought about removing it after researching planted and amazon biotope tanks. after i run out of the pre-assembled filters for my penguin and emporer, i will switch over to pot scrubbers. i dont have any in the in-tank filter on my 20g. the water is nice and tea-colored from the bogwood :) (i actually like it), just gotta watch the pH doesnt dip too low.

i have a 4 layered canister so i have enough room for it. one level is carbon.

I used carbon religously for many years until I figured out that the organic contaminants being adsorbed by the carbon are metabolized by the nitrogen cycle bacteria as a carbon source. Also, if you're adding blackwater amendments, the carbon will remove them. Finally, there is emerging data which suggests that there is a correlation between carbon use and "hole-in-the-head" disease. Oh yeah...and it takes up space that I want to devote to biomedia.
