i always wash afterwards because if i dont my hands and for arms start to itch and i get a bad rash the bacteria mess me up!!!

I used to work in a pet shop and would always foget to wash my hands for lunch...I spent many a times in the restroom after lunch and couldn't figure out why until I had an apifany on the toliet.

I just make sure I dont washmy hands with soap before cleaning my tank.
I wouldnt worry about smoking cigs and then touching the water. Ive done it and my fish didnt die. I wouldnt keep an airpump if you smoked alot though.

I have always cleaned my hands before and after you think about it we are always talking about building up the bacteria in our tanks!! I always remember my Dad warning me about an associate of his that caught fish TB from mouth siphoning his fish tanks.
