Doberman Pinscher or German Shepherd?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Other things to consider if you are going for a pure bred are potential genetically inherited health problems such as hip dysplasia and heart problems. Also, check where you live to make sure it is ok to have the specific breed you are looking to get. Do you plan on having the dog indoors, or outdoors? If outdoors, the climate in which you live would be a factor in the dogs coat. How much time/money do you want to spend on grooming would also be a consideration to take into account. German shepards have a thick undercoat and would need to be brushed regularly and stripped during the shedding period. Dobermans would need less grooming.

As a dog lover myself, it's great to see someone wanting to be totally informed before making a 10-15+ year commitment to an animal :).

Check your local animal shelter and rescue groups. You may be totally surprised at what you find.

if you goto petfinder and look at the breed listings there are 1,313 dobermans and 7,386 shepherds. I'd go with the shepherd. one of the major reasons I've had lab/mix for the last few dogs, there's so many more of them than the others. the popular and trendy animals have it the worst.
there's so many to choose from perhaps a shep/dobe mix?

wow gorgeous...........
may i ask your breeder.. later on i will be getting another dobie.. hate to think of that right now.. because i love this one dearly.. but liver disease and cancer i will not win the battle for long.......:(

In fact pure hell right now.. but i will get another dobie since i cannot be without one.. and Buffalo is not too far .. i know theres a breeder brave heart..did you ever hear of them?

^^^ Nice to see one without clipped ears

Had a german shepherd and he was the best dog ever... but the shedding was a lot to deal with. We are actually looking to get a doberman now.

Our shepherd had tufts of hair under his eyes that made him look really unique. The breeder had never seen this before but it didn't hurt him at all.

I'm glad to see so many dog lovers on here!! I also have been blessed to have had GSD and Dobermans. Currently i breed Tosa Ken and also have a male Presa Canario. I have to say that i am now partial to the rarer breeds.
