Does a Sponge Filter actually works???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The site was acting really strange last night and it seems that I somehow managed to post my reply a BUNCH of times...

Sorry about that....would one of the mods be so kind as to remove all but one of them please?

Is it really put of hand??? LOL

Ok. So the sponge filter is not good for mechanical filtration but I expected a little bit of suction but in my case there is nothing. Although it is true that when the sponge filter is squeezed, gunk does come out. I guess it filters the particles not seen by the eyes compared to the free floaters that annoy the hell out of any fish keeper.

That "gunk" that comes out of the sponge filters is probably the best food for houseplants, particularly orchids and african violets. Try it. You will be amazed at how well your houseplants do on a steady diet of this stuff!

if the sponge filter does bilogical filtration too, wouldn't you release all of the good stuff when you squeeze or rinse the sponge??

Nope, anaerobic bacteria sticks to the sponge. I use sponges in all of my filters, nothing else.

One place where a sponge filter excells is when used in a tank with eggs or fry. Unlike siphon filters they will not harm eggs or fry IF you use a moderate to light flow of air through the lift tube. A powerhead might be too strong however.

The article was profound...yes...I can see why it catches your attention..It does not mention the hell your fish would go through waiting for the rotten filter to start to show benefits. IF it even works at all....

I would agree with you here, plus even if the sponge could/did get to the state of supporting anoxic bacteria, I would dought that it could produce veiwable results.

Done. :)

has anyone ran a powerheads output through the sponges. i was considering doing this w/ a prefilter on the powerhead. i was thinking that by hooking up the venturi the ph would introduce more oxygen into the sponge therefore improving its effectiveness

any thoughts
