Does anybody actually

yeah, online research is good too... better maybe. No doubt. BEFORE you purchase!! But a few of us old farts still are in the stoneage and read books! yikes.

Hey another related feeling I have is that SO MANY people jump right into the predatory "monster" fish keeping without having a solid footing in the hobby first. What I mean is, you get people that have never had a tank suddenly see some cool things on a forum and then they go try their hand at a 240gal with some crazy fish as their FIRST TANK. ANd usually, its a long difficulrt journey for them.....

I always think of this hobby as kind of like math... you learn the basics and keep adding to it..... several years later you are busting out with the calculus. after some more time, you are doing some heavy physics and engineering, and one day you are desinging the space shuttle (that would be the 50,000 gallon dream tank!!).

ideally, Its a process of gaining years of expeirnce and knowledge over time... not a sudden leap of faith.

Just my 2 cents... I know a lot of you would disagree and that's cool.

I dont disagree at all! you are correct, but when the large tanks "fail" I can get them for pennys on the dollar:D

I have a complete selection of the better fish atlas(s) out there and mega specliaized books including health and meds but every so often i'll p/up something that I havent kept and having a bad memory either read the nitty grittys or go online and get some real time advice but this only applies to speices that are compatible with my tanks paramitors put it this way I would never buy anything hardwater as i keep soft water tanks.
also sometimes it nice just to talk about my new p/up so i'll ask a question or two just to her what people think even though i probably already know the answer..

I would disagree w/ you. I know that we need to start small. But i think going big is good. Atleast, big tanks are more stable than the small ones. Maintaining small tanks are very hard. All the parameters flactuate. Not like in a big tank. Very stable. I for one never had a big tank till last yr. And i was scared, but when it started runnig, never had any headaches w. it. And never had any death yet(knock on wood).

You're a sick, sick man. Chuck Norris would be ashamed of you! FOR SHAME!!! :banhim: :banhim:

I've only been in the hobby for 2 years and I havent lost a single fish thanks mainly to sites like MFK.

I do quite a bit of research but the way I look at it those basic questions asked here are a great start. Sometimes the info you get decides you against that fish, if not you have a springboard to start from.
