Looks kinda like heater burns.

Can it get to the heater? Are there any plecos in there that are sucking at his slime coat?
 
That's what I thought at first because she does love wedging herself between the tank and heater. Except she only ever does it one way and the marks are on both sides.

How do you know he isnt facing the other way at night? I would rule out the heater and get a cover.

What are his other tankmates?

TSN and armatus payara. I've never seen her any way on the heater except wedged with the tank wall on her right and heater on her left. We're moving the heater tonight and going tomorrow to get a new one with a cover.
