What about the guy in Canada with the two Mega tanks in his basement? I believe he's a member here, megatank or something like that is his user name. i think he has at least one that is 4' and over 100 lbs.

his user name is arapaimag .. i think.. but i don't think its a 4'

I'm definately not disputing that they can and do get 4+ feet in the wild and even in ZOO's, I've just personally never seen a REAL 4' RTC in a tank.

I've seen and owned 3 footers before, and in person they are HUGE :WHOA: Its not the length thats awesome but the width  They are truly huge.

I guess it bothers me when someone asks how big do they get and what size tank is needed and every Guppy keeper on the internet says 4+ feet and you better have a 1500 gallon tank or else. Thats simply not true. Sure they need a big tank, but more importantly they are a high maintanance fish, needing large frequent water changes and a varied diet. I very rarely see this mentioned.

Sorry to sound like an ass, it just gets fustrating to me because i've been trying to grow a 4 footer for years...........AND CANT

Why would you assume that if a fish can grow 4'+ in the wild or in public aquaria that it cannot reach that size in the home? It's not tank size that dictates growth. It's water quality, diet etc. If you're careing for your fish they way you're supposed to then it's growth won't stop. The most likely reason why you haven't seen a four footer in aquaria is because most people A) Get rid of the fish, B) It dies before it can reach that size, C) Haven't had the fish long enough or D) Aren't taking proper care of it.

I think it's best to advice people based on how large we known the fish grows, not based on the size of other members fish.

Because everyone throws that number around likes its the norm and its not. I am fully aware of their potential size, and it frustrates me how so many people comment on these fish without ever having kept one. 4' is not very realistic for a house/tank kept RTC thats all.

JMO though, and we all know opinions are like as---les, we all have one. :D

I've kept several beyond 4'. The reason you don't see them too often in home tanks is two fold:

1) People DRASTICALLY underfeed them.
2) Severe growth stunting due to small tanks.

If your fish stops growing short of average full size, you should be slapped for putting an animal in a situation that didn't meet it's needs.

Here's a pic from my LFS it not 4' but it's little over 3' and it's kept in one of four massive(250gal) over flowchamber. it's not for sale , it eat's any and everything in sight and leave's behind something the size of your average hotdog..

I'm not seeing any 4 footers here.... C'mon guys! :)
