Does anyone else dislike selling fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dislike it a lot. I tend to want to keep them forever too, and I always feel like a failure when critters turn out to not be compatible with each other. Thankfully this hasn't come up often for me, since I make a point to ask in a relevant subforum before springing on a new purchase. Re: labor and reduced time available due to pregnancy and childrearing: If setting your home up to automate waterchanges is at all feasible, there are TONS of great articles on here in the Setup and DIY section dedicated to making your fishkeeping life easier. I plan on having my cake and eating it when the time comes!

Oh, and re: tanks themselves: What is your stock like? Would the fish going into the 20 and 29 be compatible with each other? Having one 55 with the filtration from both 55s might be a more stable (read: lower maintenance) option compared to the separate 20 and 29s. Best of luck to you, and I'm glad you are keeping some animals, a home with no creatures is no home at all.

I always buy other people's fish for asking price unless their head is in the clouds and I can get the same fish somewhere else for a more reasonable price. Then when I swap fish with people I always make a trade that averages the same price. But then when I sell my fish, I get the guys that want half the price when I already am just giving the fish away.

It depends on the fish. Some fish end up being mean, not how they were described, ect.

I do not like selling fish I like.

I always try to get compatible fishes together in a tank that is big enough so fishes can stay in it for life - they are my animal babies :) ..but if it turns out that it becomes aggressive i give it away to lfs (they give discount on anything i buy in exchange) or to friends that i know..i never sell them..

I don't think anyone intends on selling any of there fish when they get them. All my fish i've had for a long time. The fish I decide to get rid of usually because they began to not get along. I had a couple of Flagtails I loved they grew really big. But they began to suck on my Bichirs slime coat wouldn't leave them alone. I could see damage to there skin. So they both were moved out of the tank eventually traded them. I had 2 Giant Redfin Goramy's raised from 4" to 15". I loved them too planned to keep them forever. But they started to attack my Putitora and some other long shaped fishes. I had to move them eventually traded them away. I had really big Leporinus awesome fish planned to keep him but he began to nip the fins of everyone. So he had to go. So all fish I sell or trade become problem fish I never wanted to get rid of.

OP sounds like a hoarder. Maybe with that much pets around your house, any new home your fish get moved to would be an upgrade.

I primarily deal with folks in my fish club vs. selling fish through MFK or Craigslist.

There are simply too many grifters, schemers, children, time-wasters and flakes out there to make it worth my while.

I dislike selling fish so much so that when I had to recently let go of 2 Columbian cat sharks I refused to let any more fish go so I had too either let go of 4 big tin barbs due too way over crowded or buy a new tank...... I went for option 2
