What kind of bait do you use? I want to go fishing for them in the MN river, but have no idea what to do.

I didn't know there's gars in MN :screwy:

Especially in the mississippi. Apparently there are a lot.

You can Bowfish for gar that is what I do

Or you can get some nylon rope and fray the end put some stink bat all over frayed end
go out about mid-day when they’re hit-n top-water and throw it out and play with it on the top until one bits pull back so the fray will get caught in there teeth but not to hard b/c you will pull out the teeth.
Its fun but you will loose about half of the ones that bite

Or you can use a rod and reel

Thanks for the tip, sounds cool. What is stink-bat? I think my ex-girlfriend had that.

Oh, stink bait, never mind.

ise live shiners, perch, bluegill and frsh shrimp. float it under a slip-flaot about 3-4' next to wing dams, overflows, and any other place you know thay hang out. night time seems to be better for bigger alligators and long-nose, but short-nose ive noticed are more active during the day...i think they have a bed time.

use 15-25 lb mono on a spinner or baitcaster (your choice) for a fight. or use 50- 80 lb braid on a baitcasting set-up, to haul 'em in. use 2/0-4/0 octpus and/or kahl hooks, attached to about 18" of 40-120 lb seven strand wire. (or you could try the new tyger line, wich is single strand wire that is tyable)

I am thinking you are probably looking at longnose gar there but they might also be shortnose, either way my favorite gar rig takes a bit of preperation. Take a 6" length of soft 3/8" nylon rope and use a lighter to melt one end solil for about an inch then fluff the other end. run a plastic wreapped steel leader through it and clip a very sharp #1 treble hook to the end that is nestled ind the fibers, use a plug bait or live chub about 6-8" long on the hook, cast past and in front of the gar and use a moderate but twitchy retrieval past the gar, when it strikes don't try to set the hook but instead use a firm, steady pressure to land the fish. They are very hard mouthed but their teeth get snaggled up it the teased nylon. If you eat them I suggest garballs made by peeling and chunking the fish then lightly steaming it, then you flake and bone the meat and use it and some egg, amd spiced flour and cornmeal to make walnut sized balls that you then deep fry. Very tasty and served with lots of hotsauce and beer.
