It looks pretty safe up there.Appears to be alert and aware of you taking its picture.Probably just taking a breather.
If the weather is good now you could try approaching it to see if it flies away.If you can get close without it flying away Id get an animal rescue service.Be careful though. If its in good condition it could hurt you.
weather is still bad and will be for another 5 days... so wonder what he will do..:(

birds of prey are surprisingly tough, chances are that hes been through storms like this before

When i was like 10, my neighbor rescued a baby screech owl being attacked by his cat during a bad storm. It was a little poofball that was pretty much helpless. He didnt know what to do with it so my dad built a cage in our garage out of 2x4s and chicken wire. We put in some branches and we fed him and took care of him until he was healthy. We mostly fed chicken liver and it would hand feed. It was amazing how smart the thing was too.

We would wear leather gloves and let him fly around a bit in the back yard and it would always come back to us until it was strong and healthy enough to leave for good. It was very cool experience, needless to say all the kids at school were jealous.

Ive had great horned owls before, its not a great horned owl, thats a screech owl for sure. It wouldnt hurt to leave some chicken liver on your porch. He might eat it.

What happened to him... hope it is a good ending

Unfortunately, he died for no apparent reason. The vet said he was fine, but obviously since he let me walk over and pick him up, something was up.

The plan was to release him back into the wild, but the funny thing about owls is if they know they have a good food source, they won't leave. It took awhile for him to lose enough weight to fly, but even then, he got about as far as my neighbors tree, and would stay there. He would glide down when I came outside, looking for a handout.

I decided to keep him, and originally had a cage for him, but he always found a way out. I would put him in there, and wake up in the morning and he would be perched on my headboard eyeballing me. So I just kept him like a house cat, pretty much came and left as he pleased. Had him for 1.5 years, and woke up one day and found him near his favorite perch dead. I felt awful.

Just typing this makes me want another one badly. I need to make time to get my falconry permits!
