Does anyone know what kind of fish this is?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, certainly a green sunfish, but a pretty one at that! They get mixed in with all kinds of tropicals at LFS. I've seen them with Mixed Africans, feeders and labeled as "South American Cichlid."

Sunfish can be aggressive and territiorial at times. I've had ones that were peaceful and got along fine with tankmates and ones who needed to be solo fish. However, I've kept several different tropical and SA cichlids and nothing compares to the personality I've seen in Sunfish, Pumpkinseeds and Largemouth Bass. It might not be what you're looking for, but I'd do some research before taking it back, you might enjoy having him!

Head over to the Cold Water, Temperate and Natives section of MFK, there are a lot of articles on green sunfish and I think you'll find a lot of helpful information there!

I hope it wasn't Polleni prices. They charge quite a bit in the St. Louis area...Then again, they're the correct fish.

Oh, yeah it seems like it is! How much are they usually?
close to nothing! they are native fish which can be hook from almost every where in the US! Sometime I only need to drop the hook in front of them and they bite!

I definitely disagree with that statement...this fish is stressed and malnurished. The drab colors and skinney appearance, along with the overall "posture" suggest he's not in optimal condition.

You're right. Right this second that fish doesn't look like the million dollar centerpiece fish we all dream of. It's stressed and malnourished, but coming from a LFS that sold it as a different species, I'm not surprised. However, the fish has a lot of potential, the right diet, light and water conditions and this will be a very pretty fish.

The guy just got had by a shady LFS. No need to add insult to injury. Take it easy.
