Keep your strokes long. Main thing, I was an All-state Swimmer in Highschool and recruited for a few div. II, and III schools butu chose not to swim. And swam for four diff. teams. Sometimes all together.
In a 50 free race you should NEVER exceed three breaths. Whenever yoru just chilling at home, practice holding your breath to greaten your lung capacity.
Lift, alot three sets of around 20-30 to help build up your slow-twitch muscle fibers which leads to greater endurance so you wont get gassed.
A healthy diet. This is the one i followed in highschool and nothing was better. NO red meat, if it walks on four legs dont eat it. get your protein from birds and fish, it's healthier any way. Double your servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Eliminate all caffeine until your biggest meet of the year and keep very very little sugar in your diet. It will take time to work yourrself into this so go easy at first.
BTW. I was swimming my 50 free in 22.82, 100 free in 49.85, 200 free in 1:51:23, 100 back in under 58:00, and a few others i dont recall, those were my main events.
