For me, the hobby keeps me out of trouble.

The reason I got into fish keeping in the first place was to give me something
to do while I was trying to clean up my bad lifestyle and get sober. I had a pretty
rough past. So I replaced a habit with a habit. So after I got out of rehab, I jumped right in.
I'm 4 years clean thanks to this hobby.

So whenever a friend or a relative brings up how obsessed I am with my fish tanks
I say, " You're right. I think I'm gunnu sell it all. Then I can buy that 5lb crack rock I've always wanted."

At first my wife was a bit dubious about me re-entering the hobby, especially when I got my third tank after a 4 hour drive. :naughty:

The part that turned her around was when a pair of my cichlids spawned and then had babies. :tropicalf Now she nags me to keep saving the youngsters :uhoh:

The only trouble we/I have with the hobby is not having the cash to buy/build more/bigger tanks. So I'm always lurking all the forum DIY sections for cheap but efficient ways to to do.

You should have heard the screams when the wife came home and discovered that I'd installed a six foot tank in the front room, that a friend gave me as he was moving overseas.

I got in big trouble with the law and fired from my summer job! I was working at an Aquarium in Houston for the summer when a customer offered me some giant snakeheads that he couldn't house anymore. They were at least 2.5 feet long! The biggest I've ever seen in person or in any book. Somehow the fish and game department found out and all hell broke loose. Here's the link to the story. There was no ill intent on my part but looking back on what happened, I fully understand why it turned into such a big deal. Read the story.
