Does Black Substrate make your cichlids look better?

Yeaaaaa the plants ended up being a bit greener than advertised haha.

If you eliminate the plants keep the beer bottle and add a tire it could be a New Jersey Biotope.
 
Here's a good example of how a fish can change appearance over different colored substrate:

Male Cuban Cichlid over dark brown gravel:

You can see it brings out his black and slight copper coloration.

Same fish over white sand:

Brings out a lot more white with some violet coloration.
 
black substrates effect tend to darkens the fish. I personally like natural golden/reddish substrates since it looks cleaner and brings out vivid color from fish.
 
Darker is definitely better since most of my fish sparkle. When they darken up, the flecks of color are even more pronounced.
 
I've got black sand but in a 65g tall, worst idea ever because the light doesn;t reach the bottom so the fish are usually dark, blagh
