a few days ago, while performing a water change on my 5 gallon top fin tank, i first noticed about 13 small baby guppies swimming around at the surface of my tank. Once i had removed all of the babies and put them in a safe, temporary nursery tank, i then noticed a red spike coming out of one of my female guppies anal area. I may add that she is most likely not the female who gave birth, seen as she showed no signs of pregnancy, is not fully developed, and hasn’t been in my tank very long. I began treating my whole tank with MelaFix, and then switched to some anti parasite food, but seen as the pellets are too big for my guppies to swallow, they can’t really eat much. i crush the pellets up just a little bit so that they can get them down, but i’m wondering if i’m dealing with a parasite, what it will do to my guppy, and what i need to treat with, because i’ve been trying to treat for about a week now, and have seen no signs of the spike disappearing. The spike also does appear to move in and out of the guppies anus, and at max i’ve seen probably about 2-3 millimeters of it. What do i do? Also are my baby guppies at sake? (unfortunately it is very very hard to get a picture of the area seen as she won’t stop moving)

Can you provide a photo of what you believe to be the parasite, on the guppy?
I can try, but it’s incredibly hard to capture the right angle when she keeps moving. I attached the best picture i could take of her (she is the guppy in front of the other one). if you zoom in really close to her bum, you can very very faintly see what i’m talking about, but i also attached my best attempt to draw what i can see in person.

Yea...hard to tell in the pics.

I can try my hardest to get a better picture. do you have any ideas as to what it could be?
If ur seeing it then some type of nematode. I suspect as it could be anything. If it is then levamisole with a 2nd dose will help.

That is most likely camanallus worms and they are incredibly difficult to treat. It’s pretty common with livebearers.

I agree with kno4te kno4te that levamisole would be the best way to treat camanallus. They don’t seem to respond to other common meds like praziquantel.

Definitely do 2 or even 3 doses and gravel vac to remove eggs. After the first dose, you should see the guppies begin expelling worms. You’d be surprised how many of your fish are infected. Good luck
