Does over dosing a tank with Melafix have a negative effect on fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess I'm going home as soon as I can and I'll do a water change. I'll do 50% today and 50% in two days.

If you have carbon in any of your filters it's going to start removing the melafix from the tank.

I had to edit my post, it sounded rude. I hope your fish make it!

I do have carbon in my two AC 110 so yeah.

So what should I do? Continue dosing the tank with Melafix and remove the carbon in my two AC 110s? Do a water change later today?

You should drop on the floor now, and ask to go home right away! I'm not joking. :grinno: Cloudy eye is sign of ammonia/chlorine or chemical burn. First thing to do when you see it is do massive water change (40%-50%) and add salt. If you want to add any chemical to your tank, you MUST do water change first, remove all carbon, since the carbon will filter out all chemical that you add. When you have a filter unplug for more than 4 hours, you should take everything out and wash. A canister with water inside and no circulation is contaminated with dead bacteria. To plug it in without proper cleaning will contaminate your tank water. You do everything backward. If I was you, I wouldn't add anything in my tank until I have a chance to do the water change, since the water quality is already bad, adding chemical will have an impact on dissolve oxygen, make it worst, plus your tank temp is in 88F. That's why the fish having hard time to breath. BTW, don't ever over dose medicine, on fish or yourself :grinno:

What i would do is fully clean out that fx5 since everything in it dead. Then just do daily water 30% changes until your FX5 re cycles. No need for melafix.

Now that you mentioned it, yes I did....

Should I brace for your response?
Bad news. Sounds like you probably should have had a Nitrite or ammonia spike as a result of the FX5 being off. Turn your temp down. Rip out your carbon. Then do a 50%+ Change then another the following day.

I'm doing a water change right now and will be rinsing the fx5 after it has drained 50% water from the tank.

By the way, I did a 50% water change on Saturday and just added the Melafix this morning.
