Does over dosing a tank with Melafix have a negative effect on fish?

I guess you are suggesting I buy a test kit... I haven't had one for more than 2 years though... I think I'll just do a water change every 3 days and do every other day feedings.

Thanks man, I hope it works out as well. FX5 is full of ceramic rings and the foam inserts.
Sounds like you got everything straight. My only suggestion would be to pick up a API liquid test kit. I would be :nilly: without mine. Seriously :) Or if you want a really nice test kit go for the seachem series they measure free ammonia only not locked up ammonia.

I touched on this earlier, but wanted to state it again. When using meds you need to make sure you have adequate aeration/surface agitation (possibly add a powerhead aimed at the surface, or reposition an existing powerhead), especially at higher temperatures.

I think I have adequate aeration since I have two hobs and the output of the FX5 is aimed towards the top of the water. I have the heater at 87F but its not really that warm considering I know how 90F feels because that's the summer temperature of my tanks.

I'll think it over if I'm gonna get a test kit...

Thanks for all the input by the way.

It sounds likes you normally have adequate aeration, but with meds added you probably need more, especially at that temperature.

I have tons of aeration on my tank and have never had any issue with heavy breather after adding meds, but my tanks are kept at 78 which should have a higher dissolved oxygen content than a tank at 88.

True. My tank is probably 6 degrees warmer than yours eventhough the heater says its at 87. I used to have a 3' bubble wand in it but I decided to remove it 9 months ago.

Why do you keep your tank at 87?

The heater gauge says its at 87F but I doubt it the actual temperature is really what it displays.

Datnoids and other Asia based fish I guess.
