I've kept over 15 Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus in 21 years of fishkeeping and about 10 Sailfins(Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps). I know how to tell the difference.

yes commons would be happier with air pump but they're just fine without current if you don't want one.

Just make sure you have bigger tank once they get bigger.

Yes it needs oxygen.
But to answer your real quetion, does it need an airpump?
Well no, it depends entirely on how your tank/filter system is set up.
