Does Regional Variability play a HUGE roll in evolutionary development?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say it's entirely possible Miles. Animals breed based on instinct, in fact on some primitive subconscious level, humans do too. I've read studies where researchers have found that women will choose the men they will sleep with based on physical characteristics including things like facial structure, height, so on. I would think that rays would be no different.

This doesn't relate perfectly, but I have seen research done on livebearers, where female swordtails will pick out the males with longer swords (kinda like humans haha), thus slowly eliminating those with shorter swordtails. Sorry I don't have any references for it, but its out there!!

I certainly do think that there is a possibility that other species could be "seeking out" the motoro pattern by interbreeding with motoro species, and I think that males and females will play a role in this selection, as males are strong, and take control of the breeding, but females are larger, so they do have a minute amount of control in this situation.

It makes sense.. Motoro being the hardiest, easiest to keep of Stingrays. They are obviously dominant in the wild as well, and females of any species recognize this, and that is why the Motoro is so abundant in all regions..

Also about the swordtails selecting the longest swords.. wonder if that is why Reticulata and Antenna have such long tails, as the female is always choosing the longest one..

Yeah.. that's kinda what I was getting at. If one group of fishes does it, why not another?? Natural selection is nature's most powerful tool for survival (and destruction).

its possible.... hopefully your colony can prove that theory in a few years ;)

natural barriers create regions, which create isolated population groups which promotes evolution. To say that regionality is a 'huge ' factor is a confusion of cause and effect. As explained to you earlier, your starting premise about long tails etc or Black ray distribution is wrong.
Try looking at environmental factors instead, for instance, all the Black rays come from clear water, longer tails species tend to be found in faster moving water etc
:)
That is why this was a zombie thread

I should have used a better word or a "real" word for that matter.
David by regionality I meant evolution being based on where the life form is located in an environment and what factors in that environment cause it to evolve in a certain way.

I have another theory. But I won't divulge that until it is proven.

then you have a hypothesis
