Does shrimp provide enough nutrition for an arowana?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello everyone,
I give my arowana worms, shrimp, small cichlid pellets, and large cichlid pellets but the only thing he seems to touchis the shrimp. Does shrimp provide enough nutritional value? I will keep on offering pellets and worms if one day he does decide to eat them, but for now will he be okay on only shrimp?
Thanks,
Tiffany

Never stick to one staple diet, be it shrimps, pellets etc eventhough they can be nutritious.
IMO, predatory fishes such as arowanas should be fed live feeders/ frogs at least once per week. It is the same theory as feeding tigers/lions, they are meat-eating carnivorous, meat will make them powerful and liveliness.

I'm pretty sure zoos don't throw in live antelopes into lion and tiger cages. Feeders do nothing except introduce unwanted parasites. A varied diet without live is still the best.

:ROFL:That's funny live antelopes in the lions cage.
But on a serious note, I do believe arrows should be giving live food as well, actually probably more than most on here. It's been my experience though, a health arrowana will eat just about any food you put in the tank. Though I don't usually use feeders (goldfish), I will go to a bait shop and flood my tank with minnows sometimes, and I have never ever had a problem with them and parasites. The only issue I once heard was that feeding live food that goes to the botom, or when your arrowan has to search down for the food aids in them developing drop eye. Not sure how much truth there is to it, but considering a lot of my arrows I have had seem to develope this dropeye, I am starting to be a beliver. And I have tried everything to make sure it does not happen from keeping as close to perfect water condition as possible to trying to buy what look like quality arrowana.
Nevertheless, I am truly sorry for your loss, yes please and make sure you cycled properly as that ammonia is a silent killer for fish, some faster thtan other..

Be careful with those minnows. They might not have parasites, but they are still packed with thiaminase. Thiamine deficiency will also cause problems in the long run.

Yes, the minnows are really a treat, I buy about a 100 and let them go at it. But the every day diet is usually massivore pellets, and they mihght snatch worm or shrimp from time to time before it hits the bottom for the rays
