Here's an update to an ongoing personal study of mine.
After my rays last litter i decided to drop the temperature from 86 to 80 to see what happened. Well i can tell you it made a big difference!!
My girl had a much longer gestation time like 3 weeks longer than usual which proves to me that lower temps slow down the metabolic rate and
increases pregnancy periods.
The lower temp also produced an increase in the amount of males in the litter. My girl had 10 pups this last litter 4xf- 6xm.

So now what do you think about the temperature making a difference, convinced or not??

Here's a link to a previous thread i did on the same subject.

I think its cool, but i suggest you get more data before making any conclusions. Seems promising but its also expected. I would like you do to it some more and see sex ratios

Excellent thread I'm so glad I found this .i to am doing the same personal study but I've been keeping my rays at a more natural temperature of between 75-79 in hopes to produce larger litters.
I don't think temp will have any sort of influence on the sexes of the rays. But I do think lower temps may produce these massive amounts of pups like your last litter!

Tell me something.... How big is your motoro size and age? Wild or captive.
Have you kept the temp consistent from the time she was pregnanted .

I think the most important time to keep the water at a more natural cooler temp is during the time she gets impregnated . This will allow a slower development and increase in litter size I hope!
People keeping their rays at above 80 are not keeping them at a natural range. I see guys on here in high 80s. The hottest it gets outside in the tropical part of brazil is mid 80s maybe the odd heat wave. The water temp will be significantly cooler espcailly in the faste deeper sections.

Hi Cal,

My female is 20/22 inches and is approx 4years old, she is wild caught as far as i know and the male is deffo wild.
I lowered the temp from 86 to 80 about 2 weeks before she was impregnated.
Im glad someone else is doing the same as me as i would like to compare notes.
Do you have any females carrying atm? and how long have you been doing this study for?

Very interested to see how this experiment works out over several litters.

Well i've done it over 4 litters to date Scott, just wish myself and Calgary could get more input from other members to help our studies. If we can prove that temp does make a difference to the sex of the pups produced then it could be a bit of a break through in future breeding programmes.

Well I don't believe so much that incubation temp will influence the sexes. The rays are alive Inside the mother I think maybe more like x and y .but I'm really interested to know if temp influences the size of litters?? You just had a batch of 10 pups that's huge. You should lower the temp even more see if the next batch is more? Best thread in a long time!

Thanks Calgary, i was running the temp at 86 and now its at 80. What would you recomend i drop it down to within reason as the health of my rays comes first.
