thats a good read pete, my motoros were about the same size and my temp on my pond is 79 / 82 , and all the litters from both females were always a average of 8 pups, if this helps

i still do not think temperature makes a different on sex's. maybe could make a different on length of pregnancy.

i think its random also. ive had many different combinations over the years and my tanks are always around 80
There's no way temperature has anything to do with the sex! That's absurd and of course cooler temperatures is going to slowdown the metabolic rate. It's no different than raising the temperature when treating for Ich. All your doing is speeding up the life cycle. This is common knowledge with cold blooded animals.

I will still keep my temp high at 86
But what I do after 100 days of being preg is turn my drip up to full power which drops the temp to 80
The added extra water and cooler temp simulates the rainy season when the river is high and more food is around making the female think it's a good time to let the pups out
The time the pups are let out I feel is down to the water conditions which is why some females have premature pups with yolk sacks as something has told them to let the pups out this could be a large water change making the temp drop making the female think it's the rainy season
I also tested this out with my last batch of pups born last week
I knew they were due soon so turned the drip up full over night and the pups were in the tank the next morning
As for the temp changing the amount of male and female pups I don't think so next you will be telling a male he has more chance of a boy than a girl if they have sex in different positions
All baby's born in Florida will be male and all baby's born in Alaska will be female lol
I wouldn't read to much into the temp affecting the sex of pups to much as you would need to do over 20 years of research on the same pair and even then the result may mean nothing you would need to do the same research on over 20 pairs and see the results and hope you don't get any hot summers in that time

Thats another large litter, what rays were they and whats the temp in the winter?
I dropped my temp from 86 to 80 and thats constant temp, it does not fluctuate.
I dont think its absurd, there are many possibilities!! but it good to see some negativity. I have been running my tank for 4.5 years at 86 degrees and have never encountered itch.
Thanks for the input Richard, its interesting to see how people try to entice their females to drop their pups. Dont you think that it would be better to let the female go full term on her own instead of interfearing with the temps? i have no experience in keeping black rays but i understand that their pregnancy term is longer than motoro, is this true? I let my female drop when she is ready and keep my tank at a constant temp, i keep a good supply of a variety of foods going in and keep a close eye on my water parameters.
Im not saying that it is true of all species im just wondering if the temp makes a difference in rays as no one has asked the question before. I think its a legitimate question that needs some answers.
As for the florida v alaska thing now thats absurd lol.
I dont think i'll be around for the next 20 years so that buggers me up dont it.
What temp does it run at before the rainy season?
I dont think temp will make a difference to sex eithor,thats just my opinion of course.I have discussed this question with many people over the years,.My females always birth after a large evening water change..happens everytime,i have found this to be the case with leo and henlei.
