So I've been lurking for quite awhile and have been reading the stickies and other threads about rays. I made the plunge and ordered some hystrix. After acclimating them for an hour, I netted the first female and put her into the qt tank.
Her stinger got caught in the net and I had to cut the net to free her (piece of net is still stuck on her stinger). I put her in the tank and she looked normal. I covered the tank and left it completely dark. Came to check on her 1 hour later and noticed her front disc curling. Its been 6 hrs now and her front disc is still curled up.
I've been searching through the threads and read that death curl usually starts at the back of the disc.
I added dissolved aquarium salt in a couple hours ago. Im hoping that will help.
Is the hystrix in the pic showing signs of curling????

Not looking good... That's death curl. Usually does start at the back, but it is what it is.

Make sure you water is perfect and pray for the best.

yup, sorry, surprised if its still breathing..it looks dead.

agree, not looking to hot. Sorry for the loss.

Sorry, but it appears to be. I had a 3" pup that I recieved this fall that started curling
and it took 2 days for it to pass. I probably should have euthanized but I kept hoping it
would reverse.:(

I feel so bad that I caused this. Was looking forward to watching her grow.....:(
I'll keep you guys updated on her status.
Thanks everyone!

sorry,it sucks to see them go.Rays are definitely some of the coolest fish in the world.

How do you think u caused it?

I bet it was unhealthy, small hystrix are sensitive after shipping. Especially new imports.

When I netted her to put her in the qt tank, her stinger got caught in the net. It took me 5 minutes to cut the net off her (she was still in the water while I was doing it). Im thinking it was the stress of the ordeal that caused her to curl.

I know there isn't much known about death curl but does it involve damage of any speific organs???

Not sure....

How did you accilimate? How long was the ray in shipping? If it was longer than 8hrs, I always do the Squirt and Dump Method of acclimating. If the Ammonia in the bag is high, I drop a couple drops of amquel in there which kills the ammonia, then quickly take most of that water out, then gently dump the ray in the tank. If less than 8hrs, I do normal drip acclimation...

Coulda also been PH shock from the bag, to your tank, depending on how much water you transferred to the bag and so forth...

OR coulda just been an unhealthy ray. SORRY to hear about this guy, no1 likes to hear about this let alone see it!
