Does this look like death curl...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
She might pull thru, but more than likely, she will not make it.. Im sorry.
I had one die oce and I was very upset. So I know how you feel.
Check your water tonight if you can, even do a 30% to 40% water change. That about all you can do to help her..
If she does pass on, take her back with a sample of your water also and get your money back... if you can.

Not sure....

How did you accilimate? How long was the ray in shipping? If it was longer than 8hrs, I always do the Squirt and Dump Method of acclimating. If the Ammonia in the bag is high, I drop a couple drops of amquel in there which kills the ammonia, then quickly take most of that water out, then gently dump the ray in the tank. If less than 8hrs, I do normal drip acclimation...

Coulda also been PH shock from the bag, to your tank, depending on how much water you transferred to the bag and so forth...

OR coulda just been an unhealthy ray. SORRY to hear about this guy, no1 likes to hear about this let alone see it!

The rays were shipped overnight to me. I put them in a rubbermaid tote with the water they came in, then I drip acclimated them with the qt tank water for one hour at 3-4 drops per second. AFter that I moved them into the qt tank. This is a picture of her a few minutes into the qt tank:

YEA.... Thats what i was afraid of. Probably should have done the squirt and dump acclimation. Ill find the post about it, and post it here in a sec.

If the ray dies, sorry bud....hey, its happened to me as well, welcome to the ray world... Atleast you can learn from this. And ATLEAST the ray didnt run ya $1000+...
Don't get discouraged and welcome to mfk!

good info ajsmith...
Have read that info before, but still good to refresh myself with that stuff.
And prob the reason the ray is having trouble..

I always have my LFS order or have anything shipped to him for me. He takes care of all this for me and I leave my orders there for a day or so to make sure it relaxes before I go pick it up and bring it home.
Dont like to have them stressed from shipping and then the same day get stressed from being brough home. I let them relax for a day or so before I pick them up. Plus it gives me time to make sure all is ok..

Again, sorry ICP that has happened.. we all have been thru it and its always hard to deal with.
Like ajsmith said, dont give up and keep trucking.. welcome and best of luck....

Thanks BCFD

The credit goes to Miles... Would like to see him come back to MFK... Jeffers told me about Miles, and showed me ALOT and taught me alot, and Miles's posts have really helped me, and I havent lost a ray since reading all of Miles posts. Whenever i have time, I just scroll through his info.

Thanks for the link AJSmith!!
That was a very good read. I'm going to find Miles old threads and start reading them....:D
I'll be doing the squirt and dump method from now on.
Thanks everyone for the support and advice, I'll give you guys an update tmrrw.

No problem man. I know how it was when i first go into rays, and was greatful for a few pple that helped me.

Just remember, squirt and dump isnt for everytime, just when the ray or bigger fish has been in a bag for a long period of time. It works great for rays bc of their huge bioload... one dump from a ray in a shipping bag could probably spike the ammonia. Thats why most pple will not feed their rays for 48hrs when shipping... helps with them not crapping in the bag haha.

Keep us updated on how the hystrix is doing.

Whats ur water parameters at btw... just curious....ammonia, nitrate, nitrite?

for what its worth,,hope she pulls through............
