Dog food as cichlid food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Donating it to a shelter is a good idea. Just an FYI, most, if not all dog food is made from with pork, beef, poultry or a combination of all the three. These ingredients alone are not easily digestible by fish. Most commercial dog food contains corn, which isn't the greatest thing to be feeding fish either. HTH.

My friend chris feeds his 3-4 foot channel cats dog biscuits in his pond...

Maybe crazy but why can't your dog eat it.

It gives him the trots, It was one of those things where my wife said get this and not that and I mixed them up. Thank you whoever was talking about the ingredients too, that's exactly what I was curious about. I know they mainly include proteins that are from cows/pigs etc... and that a fish may have problems digesting totally foreign meat sources. I was hoping someone would tell me that they were so processed that it wouldn't matter, and I would be set with food until doomsday, but I kind of had a feeling it wouldn't go that way. I don't think I would have been able to trust it either way, but looking at that mountain of potential re-purposed food got the best of me. Giving it to the pound makes me even happier, I may not be able to take any more dogs home but its cool that I can help them temporarily. Thanks again everybody, enjoy your next Tootsie Roll or Baby Ruth bar.

Personally, I wouldn't feed that food to either... Too much corn, no real meat product, etc. for your dog, look for meat as the first ingredient and try to stay away from corn. His coat and skin will love you for it, lol. Also, more is absorbed into the body, so less food and less poop to pick up!

As for feeding it to your fish, based on those ingredients I would say no for the same reason. On the other hand, I feed my large cichlids Kirkland brand grain free salmon formula. The fish love it, it's cheap, and the ingredients are excellent and rival most common fish food I find (not like nls, but better than many).

I'll post an ingredient pic when I get the next bag.

Ingredients in order of amount used prior to process per the posted image are:

1) whole grain corn (2 stars) found in 5% of pet food products analyzed
Contains all nutrients of corn but indicates the use of feed-grade (old, moldy), not human-grade (healthier, fresher), can cause allergies, weight gain, blood sugar imbalances.
2) corn gluten meal (1 stars) found in 31% of pet food products analyzed
Waste product, cheap, non-nutritive filler but used as protein source -- can cause allergies and sugar imbalance.
3) chicken something meal...can't read it
4) whole grain wheat (2 stars) found in 3% of pet food products analyzed
Contains all nutrients of wheat but indicates the use of feed-grade (old, moldy), not human-grade (healthier, fresher), can cause allergies.
5) animal fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols) (1 stars) found in 1% of pet food products analyzed
Non-descript source, often rancid to begin with, regardless of natural preservative use afterwards, misleading.
6) soybean meal (3 stars) found in 13% of pet food products analyzed
Dogs can not digest soybeans, can bloat/die. Good source of protein and fiber for cats.
7) brewer’s rice (1 stars) found in 31% of pet food products analyzed
waste product from breweries, cheap, non-nutritive filler can be harsh on intestines and lead to diabetes.
8) meat and bone meal (natural source of calcium)
(1 stars) found in 4% of pet food products analyzed
Non-descriptive indicates 4-D meat, cheapest source, can include diseased tissues plus bone meal can not be digested and assimilated as calcium!

Also contains salt (hides rancid flavor) and sugar. Sugar!

You can read the list and disagree, but I consider this to be a horrible dog food. I'd never purposefully give this to my dog. It's actually worse for fish.

Don't worry we don't use that brand, and even if we did I think I would switch after that breakdown. Thanks for the information about the ingredients, both for my dog and fishes sake.

Not to mention all the grease they spray on it would stay in the tank, yucky.
