I know someone who adds 5-10G of fresh tap water at a time to his tank!!

Is this safe for the fish?? I mean they are still alive but... wow!!

When I cleaned his tank for him the other day,(it hadn't been cleaned in over 3 mos!)he kept telling me it was normal to do . He doesn't let it sit out 24-48 hrs to disperse the chlorine, either. He adds it straight from the tap!

If the water is aerated well while it's being added (like through a Python), one may not need de-chlorinator.

You did not mention what size tank the 5-10 gallons is being added to. If it's a very large volume, the dilution would mitigate most of the harmful effects, but I would not choose to do so personally.

It depends on the size of the tank. It's not something that I would do, but if there is enough water still in the tank to dilute the concentration of any chlorine or other chemicals, it could be done with no ill effects.

Wow, that was a forum 'jinx' moment!

i always add dechlor when i add tap water to the tank. many places are switching to chloramine, which doesn't dissipate from the water like chlorine does. so aging the water won't help. even if i know my place uses chlorine, i would still add dechlor. its not worth the risk to me to save that little bit of dechlor.

I believe the only set back to adding tap water without it being dechlorinated is killing off your bacteria. If the tank is large enough, it may not make a huge difference ...depending on how much you add.

I did it once just to top off 5 gallons in my gulper tank, and they all started twitching. I quickly threw in a quintuple dose of prime, and they went back to normal

:iagree: But cannot convince him....:(

its his fish his tank you already know he doesn't really care about them.At the end of the day all you can do is offer advice. As long as you know you're doing the best keeping your own fish.Thats all that matters-Anne
