Dolphin situation in Japan

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know i'm going to get flamed for this but honestly i don't really think we should be any more disturbed by people eating dolphins than people by eating fish, just because something is more intellegent than the creature next to it doesn't mean it deserves to live more than the dumber creature. i don't care how intellegent an animal is, it still deserves to live just as much as anything else. as long the animal is 1) not threatened 2) killed in a humane manner(i guess these weren't, i don't want to watch the video) and 3) it's absence isn't going to negativly impact the habitat it was taken from, then i see no reason why it shouldn't be on the menu.

I am not one to flinch in the face of horror, but that was a truly revolting display. if that were the US those men would be thrown in prison and forced to pay enormous fines. I bet those men are simply ignorant and think that dolphins are just brainless fish and have no idea that they are as smart as non-human primates. they do not deserve to die but they certianly should be thrown in jail for a good long time.

<i wouldnt be suprised if it was all the 3 things you stated>
what do you mean?
<I bet those men are simply ignorant and think that dolphins are just brainless fish and have no idea that they are as smart as non-human primates. >
it's that same atitude that really pisses me off every time i try to prevent someone from abusing a fish or reptile. "it's just a goldfish, who cares" or "this goldfish was breed to live in a small bowl" or "bettas do best in a betta cup" or "it's just a snake" or "this snake needs to be in a smaller cage to feel secure" i've heard all of these and many more from stupid ignorant people who think that just because something doesn't fit their definition of intellegent it is just a worthless object that serves no purpose. hell, i've had people that watched my ribbon snake or pac man frog eat feeder goldfish(before i found out how nasty they where) and not even flinch but when i put a mouse into my kingsnake's cage they freak out claming that i can't kill the poor cute mouse, can't i just feed the snake something else.
although i do agree that if the people are inhumanely killing the dolphins then they should be punished, but i also think that people who slit a fish open and just throw it onto a bank and then walk away should also be punished and i think that rattlesnake roundups should also be banned(if i gathered up a bunch of strays and killed them to prevent rabies, even if i did it humanely, i'd be in jail for a very decent amount of time)

"which often violate treaties"

sounds like a good enough reason to declare war and take over.

serious...that F'd up! and to think that its going on right now....

fer sher...but look how they kill them...and dolphins breath air (so they dont die as quick/while being hauled away) and pretty much they know whats going on.....but if they really where smart, they'd immagrate to the US and avaid japan all together...lol

Wow... the responses in this thread surprise me more than the video itself. Ignorance is bliss, and you were all warned. Slaughter of those dolphins looks very wrong to the eyes of Americans, but think of how it looks to other cultures that we eat pigs, or cows, or how we ruthlessly poison rats (yes they are holy in some cultures). To those that want to go harm, or kill those that are doing that, you may want to start with the US first where cows, chickens, and pigs are slaughter in much the same way, often not even dead when their meat is being stripped from their bones. Also, doing what many of you stated will be a far worse crime against humanity than what these people are doing. Think of what you say/type, before you act. I am in no way saying what is being done is the proper thing, but different cultures believe, and act differently.

If this were any other website and you posted this video, i think I might be inclined to side with you. However I don't think the reactions posted here were any different from what you would see on a rat-lovers website after posting video's of rats being poisoned, or a on spider lovers website after posting pictures of the little critters smooshed on the bottoms of people shoes ... so I'm not sure I really understand your point....

MY point, is that you can't come to a website dedicated to the love of a particular animal/person/thing, post a video of that love being harmed and then be shocked when people react strongly to those that are doing the harming.... but thank you for the video... I had no idea that this was going on until I viewed this... ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power ;)

I'm not saying that one way is right or another, but "inhumane"? Killing another human isn't inhumane, but killing a dolphin is? People have their hearts in the right place, but their means is wrong. I do not agree with the slaughter of these dolphins, but then again they aren't endangered like some species of fish that are kept in MANY tanks on this forum. My point is that people need to think before they speak.
