Done with Canisters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
and the newer eheims have a lever to turn off the hoses and quick disconnect to just lift out the container and take it to your tub or toilet. Bad Ass

I would use an FX5 or is you won't a HOB use a couple of AC 110's

I run only two kinds of filters: Eheim canisters or AC HOBs ... no complaints

I don't get why you would say Eheims are tough to maintain ... not only are they straightforward and simple, but you only need to do it 3-4x year ...

I think people mess with their canisters too much. :grinno:

you only have to service canisters about 2 times a year. is it that hard?

Its not an issue of service difficulty, canister is not functioning

I run a sump and wet/dry on all my tanks and will never go back to canisters or HOB not even for small tanks. The efficiency and ease of use with a wet/dry, simply can not be beat. The price can not be beat either if you build your own.

I do build my own filter setups though. If you don't design them for efficiency and ease of use, than they wont be.

I cut my own filter pads from polyester fabric I get by the yard cheaply at the fabric store and use pot scrubbers for bio-media. I design my sumps to have a bio-tower with mechanical filtration on top and also have an algae scrubber in the sump. My water perimeters can't get much better and I have not needed to do water changes on any of my tanks running an algae scrubber.

All I do is change the filter pad about once a week (which is VERY easy) and top off the tank about once a week, oh and feed the fish. I use a pretty fine filter pad so it needs to be changed often but I could switch to a more course pad and probably drop down to changing the pad once a month. But the pad I use now, polishes the water very well and the tank water is crystal clear.
