Its all to common. The thing that is REALLY distrubing though is that there are many LFS out there that Walmart puts to shame.
I do buy from Walmart. Can't deny it. Sometimes they have good fish in, sometimes stuff you wouldn't expect to find. Some Walmarts actually take great care of their fish. I guess it just matters who is doing it and where its at.

One thing that walmart does right is hold down prices regionally. When Walmart stopped selling fish here, the fish prices at the chain stores almost trippled.
It's certainly not as simple as Wal-Mart bad, LFS good....almost all Wal-Marts are bad and a lot of LFS are....but
The best Wal-Mart fish department will never be as good as a solid LFS.
Apart from Wal-Mart generally treating fish as stock (to be sold before it expires), their well documented abuse of employees - stealing overtime, discrimination against returning military reservist employees, shoddy health benefits, etc. - keeps me from buying from them.
I'd rather pay a little bit more (usually a matter of pennies or dimes) and not support perpetuate behavior I don't believe in.
I think others would prefer to continue to give them money...and complain when they don't change.
As for LFS, the saying goes: the LFS that you support is the LFS that you have. Hobbyists are some of the worst and the best customers for LFS. Don't expect that your LFS will stock the weird fish/supplies that you want...if you don't buy anything from them.

If you're buying other stuff (fish food, supplies, jars of pickles, electronics, etc.) from Wal-Mart...you might as well be buying fish from them.
Notice they don't carry any "monster" fish at Wal-Mart, as so few of them live long in the conditions. Once in a blue moon you get lucky enough to find a real hearty fish who was probably fed by other less fortunate souls. I've been lucky enough to find some healthy (as they can be in the conditions) and fairly large fish at Wal-Mart. Typically, however, I would not buy more than a 12cent goldfish for my nephew from a store that should be renamed "Made-In-China-Mart". Bleh
