I hate idiotic pet owners.
Good for you cleaning the tank for the fish's sake - that was sweet of you.;) :clap
Maybe their tank should "disappear" and "reappear in your house! :naughty:

Theft is always a good idea:grinno:

i just dont understand why someone would want to have a fish tank if they have no intentions of cleaning it or taking care of it. ignorance is no excuse anyone who is in the hobby new or experienced knows the importance of h2o changes its stressed so much. theres no excuse, dont have the fish if you dont want to take care of them. simple as that

I think you did the right thing. It wasn't your fault. Your friend said it was his tank. You gave him advice and who knows how he told it to his mom. You are right though. Some people are just stubborn.

Not trying to steal the post but my story. Well. One of my friends mom got her and herself a tank. Her mom got a 29gallon and put 2 Oscars and 1 Common Plec in it. My friend got a 10gallon and put 6 Neons, 15 Guppies, 2 Swordtails, 1 Goldfish, and 1 Common Plec. I said nothing about stock because I knew they would just get mad. Well. At first the tanks were okay, but then the water started evaporating. The thing was. They wouldn't fill the tanks back up. It got to the point where the 29 was missing about 4-5" of water and the 10 only had 2" of water in the whole tank. So. I asked her mother and her if I could fill up the tank. She said yes. I filled them up about 3 times after that. Every time I asked her first and always got her permission before I messed with the tanks. Well. One day my family and them and me were on the porch talking. Then her mom started talking about how I was always messing with the tanks and she didn't want me too. That just boiled my blood because I have ALWAYS asked for her permission first. Both tanks eventually crashed. Well. Recently I was forced to sell them my 29gallon. It only had 3 Betta's (1 male 2 female) in it. They then put 2 Angels in it. Well. When I was over there last. The male Betta was dead on the gravel and been there for 2 weeks, the filters had stopped, and there was mold growing. I just didn't say anything though because of what she said when I helped them last time.

I think that it's ok to eat fish and such. BUT. I think theres a major difference between raising fish and such to be eaten, and getting a fish just to kill it when it gets to be a nuisance, and then getting another one.

Whatever she said you did the right thing. Good for you!

Personally, I think you did the right thing. You saw fish suffering, and you helped them out. You also did the POLITE thing. I applaude you on that. If it were me, I would have gone the ewurm way. That's just me. I CAN'T STAND IT, when someone says that their right, they know everything on the subject, AND insist they MUST have more expirience than you, (in this case) because they are older. I mean, I know people who WORK in fish depts. in stores whom are TWICE my age, and I know more about the fish in THIER DEPARTMENT than them. I don't mind educating them, but it's the ones that think they know more JUST because they are older. Drives me INSANE. ESPECIALLY whan they are WRONG. How big were the commons?? I would like to CONGRATULATE you on the fact that you did all that cleaning for them without even a thank you, and got lectured for it. WoW. Nice.

The Jack Dempsey man

oh man you said it. people really think that because they are older that they are wiser. i'm 17 and I work part time in my department and i know more about fish and herps than anyone else in the store. The only two people that knew that were my manager and my supervisor. I hate it when someone who is maybe 5 years older than me treats me like I'm 12 and that I don't know anything. I've got a friend who has been serious about fish for 20 years that wants my input for what to do for his pond, but one of my coworkers gives out wrong information because she thinks she knows everything because she has a betta. ha, that betta wouldn't last a minute with my fish.

You (I) and all the other finger-pointing MFKers daily buy and eat meat from animals that were directly or indirectly killed at our convenience. These animals are mainly mammals or birds with highly developped nervous system and intelligence many times superior to any of the fish we keep, yet almost all are kept in inadequate conditions and suffer incomparably more then a fish possibly could.

It doesn't make torturing fish right. But it does make it look rather insignificant in comparison with all the other animal and human abuse going on.

I agree with the rest of your post including the woman being a b1tch (veuruckte cleaned her tank for free! only a b1tch would complain). I disagree with the accusation of immorality as this incidence of her behaviour is still ethically superior to that of any meat, leather etc etc consumer.

Whether or not you define something as a "pet" and assign it more rights, is not everybody's problem. Whether or not a fish is bread for food or is chosen to be loved with perverse dedication as many nerds here do, it is still the same fish. Many of the fish species used as feeders are more intelligent than the "pets" they are fed to. Where is the moral of that practice?

It is bad enough the Law of Western countries arbitrarily prohibits the consumption of canine and feline meat while allowing to abuse pigs and stuff.

It is this short-sighted pet-adoring reality-ignoring atittude that is immoral. The b1tch'es slate is spotless.
I ordinarily avoid moral discussions on this forum, (except for one I inadvertently started with the 'glowing fish' thread)
but...
This opinion based argument on how fish are no different from other animals and there are greater cruelties is a good opening for me, as a vegetarian and sometime animal rights activist to make some slightly more objective (that is to say, less moral) arguments heard. As a vegetarian, I stand on equal moral ground between all animals. But, unlike many of my ilk, I am a scientist and a practical man. I condone keeping certain pets because their capacity to recognize their captivity is limited by their cognitive function. Some fish have such bad short term memory that when they are not mating or eating they just swim in circles. I also recognize the usefulness of animal studies for medical purposes, but do not condone the use of animals to study things like cigarettes, which are purely `wasteful, both of resources and of human life. Likewise, the killing of that plecostomus is wasteful. It depletes wild populations without any gain, as this woman doesn't seem to have much emotion towards it, and it is doubtful that the finds their companionship enjoyable. Compare to the passenger pigeon or carolina parakeet. Seemingly limitless resources were squandered to depletion, when just a tiny bit of moderation would have preserved these resources. When people shoot bushels of birds out of the sky for the fun of it and then leave them to rot, they are displaying the same mentality as this person, the same mentality that is destroying the worlds wild places.

And remember....always buy captive bred!

u r waxing lyrical

well let's all face it people, there are owners that will eat their fish and others that will not. my opinion is, we have different lives and have varied sets of principles that we go by. one man is different from the other and if someone here says that his dinner is his pet and someone feels disgusted about it, its just their selves reacting to the situation, i mean they come from different points of view, and react differently. we all eat fishes almost everyday the main difference is there are fishes raised for human consumption and fishes raised as pets. and some people look at fishes the same way, if its edible it can be eaten, while others can't bare the thought of eating their pets. for example is the Arapaima, some people eat them some don't, its just their point of view, nothing is wrong their. hope y'all get me. this is my take to this discussion.

but what is important is that if we ever get pets, we should take good care of them as much as we can, as long we can, and if ever we want to eat them or kill them we must ensure that we do it in the most humane procedure as possible. lets face it we are all meat eaters, partaking flesh every ones in a while (except for the vegetarians)

btw even noobs will know if the water is already polluted or not and if they are unsure, will take responsibility and ask others that knows more than them. i think its just sheer lazyness that keeps some people from not taking good care of their pets. lets all hope that these people will learn their lessons in the long run.

eventually we must be open minded enough and accept the fact that we can even learn some things from kids in preschool when we're already college graduates and working for some bigtime company.

regards to all. :)
