Have you lived in a bubble, lol? Dorado have been around forever. Lots of people have them. And you didn't hear about Dorado first here, lol. That's just ridiculous. I'm not bashing, but MFK didn't bring you dorado or start the movement to keep them in the aquarium - that's just silly.

Do a google search for Salminus maxillosus.

Clay, yes dorado has been around forever, but how many poeople knew about them is a diffrent story.

"the movement" = promoting keeping rare, exotic and predatory fish ;)

google results - which is more common?

Salminus maxillosus = 89
Serrasalmus rhombeus = 285
Astronotus ocellatus = 934

hahahah. well said rayman. and will FUGU ship those to Cali or are they illegal here too. and whats the price like on those killers? i would really consider picking a few up to see what they are like in person. they look like tropical trout to me?????

Dude, fugu (Rare Fish) is just up the street in West Covina, he'll ship here to SD if you want, but I'd rather go there and pick up myself. They're legal in CA.

Nice pick up, Li! I seem to be in the minority of folks who've been able to keep dorado in a community setting. I have two 12"+ dorados schooling with seven 12-15" redtail Brycon and other tankmates in my 360 gallon. I'll let you know when the experiment implodes. ;)

actuall you donkey I DID hear about it first here at MFK. who gives a **** if you have seen them around forever. did you not hear me say I NEVER saw those before MFK. i just want to know some info, not listen to you tell me how long theyve been around. i have worked with fish for MANY years and have never encountered one in person. sure, maybe saw pics but never heard of the evil sounding dorado people are talking about here. all i want is info, not to listen to you NOT BASHING me. i never said MFK was the first sit where people kept them, just the first place i learned of a new fish id like to keep

ive kept a good number of predatory fish, but nothing i had ever came close to being as means and aggrssive as my dorado - he was a non-stop eating, swimming and tormenting machine - whatever i threw in the water he would eat and he NEVER stopped swimming - i had to move out the other tank memebers b/c he just brutally attacked them constantly and he was smaller then the other fish! i had him in a 125 by himself for a while and finally got rid of him b/c i wanted to breakdown the tank

has any other dorado owners know what i mean when i say they never stop swimming? it is very strange its like a shark on high alert all day everyday

anyways nice pick up they rule!

They're not out of the Amazon, they're out of mainly southern brazil and argentina.

And yeah, they put up a fight:

I have a picture of a bigger one I caught somewhere, but I can't find it.

Just seems odd that you haven't heard of dorado. Sorry to offend. I could understand if you were talking about korean perch or something. I have never seen or heard of anyone keeping those before they were introduced here. I thought dorado were pretty commonly known. Kinda like lugubris family pikes.... Anyone who has been around for a few minutes knows what a lugubris pike is.

And "donkey", I wasn't bashing you, but if the shoe fits.... These new fish called Betta splendens are around...

Again, for information, do a search. Scientific name is Salminus maxillosus, but don't get them confused with salmon. I used to think they were related, but from a little research learned that they are not.
