People need to toughen up a bit. If you are a young sensitive fishkeeper who has insecurity issues go over to the beginner forum on fishlore, they are very gentle and will let you suckle on their teets. Otherwise grow a pair and stick up for yourself. Enough with the moaning already.

perfect.

Who's moaning?

I just read a thread where the OP is breeding BGJDs to get EBJDs and he was advised to kill the non EBJD fry. Now how is that different then keeping a fish in small tank and killing it when it outgrows the tank? I just want to understand how is the first one OK and the second needs to be "schooled" on proper fish keeping as the above poster states?

NOOICE!!:D

OK i must state that i started with paranhas (which ate large goldfish) and moved onto convict mating with fry.. and THE FRY are considered feeders to other fish owners.. so it ALL depends on WHY ur doing what ur doing with your fish.. as for overcrowding.. thats just plain cheap to not upgrade according to the fishes comfort (silly really)

Well in both cases the reason WHY ur doing it is the same - overcrowding. But why isn't the breeder that's intending to cull the fry being advised to "get another tank for the fry and if he cannot he should not keep a breeding pair" just like the the keeper with a small tank is being flamed to "buy a bigger tank or don't keep that fish"?

this doesnt sound like general aquaria discussion.......... to much whining.. its a public advice forum...... if you see its a double standard put it in your memory bank in your knowledge (so you know whats right) and get on with yourself.

^^ I agree appreciate the circle of life. Now the Poster No.1 is killing fish intentionally and surelly on a daily basis while the Poster No.2 as worst case scenario could end up killing 2 fishes in a year, that's if he doesn't sell them or rehome them later.
To elaborate more to the subject let's assume that the OP in the Thread No.2 says but my Oscar is only 3" and the other fish I want to add is 3" too.
And the most common responses he would recieve:
Ur stuborn and don't listen to anyone/ Ur stupid cuz u don't listen to those that are "MUCH" more experienced then u etc...

feeders aren't wasted life, fish that get mutilated in small tanks are wasted life. There are plenty of fish that adequately fit a 55 gallon an oscar is not one of them. most all fish foods contain fish so feeding feeders is not any different really than feeding food in terms of lives lost. Meanwhile cruelly keeping an animal who's well being depends on you in a small tank is really sad.

The issue I take with the threads is same as I've always taken with some of the attitudes you get on here. Yelling at someone doesn't inform them, it shuts them down and turns them away from reason. If indeed an animal is in trouble berry the rage and try to calmly help.

killing fish outright for no reason is plain stupid and is the same as mutilating them IMHO. I cull my fish by feeding them to my bichirs if I have defect fish or extra stock. Way better uses for extra fish that just outright killing them. I agree if you don't want fry don't keep breeding pairs. So many people breed the heck out of convicts and JDs with no intention of doing anything with the fry. They do it because its cool and leave them in the parents overstocked tank to waste away or donate 100 fry to the local pet store every month.
