Dourado Keepers?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow, I didn;t know they were that aggressive. I like them.

I regret not buying one when I drove for miles to get my wolf fish. Dorados are very uncommon in the UK.

But as aggressive as you all say they are, they were in the same tank as the wolf fish, and the dorados were bigger. The D's were scarred and marked up and they wolves looked completely unscathed.

In my experience Dorados go for broke 24 hours a goddam day. I have had several and still have 1 in my collection(Doctor Doom) is as nasty as they come. Has successfully broke up any and all living animals I put in his area. Even some of the "so called" worst fish. But is probably one of my FAVORITE FISH ;)

how big do dorados get in captivity?

The ones I've seen on google, wild ones, look enormous - however all of the captive ones I've seen look quite small.

i had sell my dorado b/c of his aggressiveness, the fish never stopped swimming and ate like nothing ive ever kept before -- i sold him to my friend who runs a lfs and he sold him to someone that had a similar set up to the one i had him set up in -- two days later the dorado was back in the store, he killed every one of the guys fish which were all about a foot in length

very cool fish and i would have loved to kept him but i wouldn't recommend any tankmates they are just non-stop killing machines

fugupuff how big is yours - b/c mine wasn't overly aggressive until he hit 10-11 inches and then he started putting on girth -- he did some nasty damage to a much big clown knife and gar and killed my pleco -- right before i got rid of him he put a big open wound on my gar and my poor knife fish tail was all bitten up and had wounds all over his body (they have both since recovered greatly and are much bigger and healthier)

anyways dorados imo are some of the coolest fw predators around good luck if you decide to get one

Lol! Ruckus... 'Doctor Doom'... an appropriately given name! :D Anyways, everything what Ruckus said, I agree! Dorados are non stop moving, EATING/KILLING machines!! These fish are no joke!! Had a couple dorados awhile back,,, constantly would be bumping heads with one another and school @t the same time. Only time when they would stop or take a break doing so was when food was thrown in the tank, or when other tankmate(s) would get in their way/path... And when any would... By instinct, the dorados would ATTACK!! kept a juruense at the time... got it's entire back tail and nearly half the body shredded off!)... mauled by dorados in a matter of seconds! Ended up having to SELL them OFF!! Never the less tho, they are still one of the most beautiful fw fishes!!

so where are these dorados and how do i go about getting one. never really paid much attention to them. the last pic looks like a salmon or trout type of fish. are they tropical and how big do they get. i want one if they are as cool as you all seem to think. info would be appreciated.
